This is essentially a set of mini biographies of five extraordinary women in the first half of the twentieth century. The conceit of the book is that they are bound by addresses in Mecklenburg Square, Bloomsbury, but in many cases the address is irrelevant: Jane Harrison, for example, a 'foremother' to classicists, doesn't even move there till most of her career is over/5. Yet most writing about her still revolves around her social life and the Bloomsbury set. In this fresh, absorbing book, Julia Briggs puts the writing back at the center of Woolf's life, reads that life through her work, and mines the novels themselves to create a compelling new form of : Robin Kear.
